BTT One-Shot: Parsely, Ep. 2

We start off on our 2nd life for this adventure, after a player couldn’t resist doing something just to see what would happen. Also, this time around seems to be a bit more of a puzzle that takes a little bit of trial and error to solve. But honestly, who hasn’t spent hours playing a game, wandering across the map, and missing the one bit of crucial equipment?

BTT One-Shot: Parsely, Ep. 1

Here’s a different kind of role playing game from a familiar game designer, Jared A. Sorenson. This game plays like an old style, text-based computer game, so the cast will have to work together to beat the story before they run out of lives, or chances to save the game. And of course, it wouldn’t be Bone Throwers Theater if some of the choices made weren’t thought all the way through. This is going to be a fun one!

When we play a new game, we always love to give some of our thoughts on it, so here is a commentary episode. Aaron shares where he drew his inspiration from for the story. We discuss some of the game mechanics, as well as the differing feel of our one-shots, and look ahead to some of the games we have slated for “future” one-shots on Bone Throwers Theater.

Rival mobster families, and late night warehouse showdowns make for a classic 1920’s gangster story. In this episode the players throw Aaron some curveballs, both with the ruleset and also in the story, by getting a bit ahead of themselves. It looks like disaster awaits for at least one character. We’ll see.

It’s time for the first ever, Bone Throwers Theater Christmas Special. Aaron takes the reins and drives the sleigh through the cold winter night for a new game for the podcast, Capers. In this episode, we polish off character creation, set the scene in the 1920s for this Christmas story, and get our first look at the rule set involving a deck of cards rather than dice. Hang on tight, as we start this fun story we have nicknamed “How The Mob Saved Christmas”.

This game has been listed as an inspiration for the show since the beginning, and we finally got around to playing it, so we had a lot of fun talking about it in this commentary episode. Although Jordan reveals the amount of homework he did for this story, as usual, the player’s choices didn’t always line up to bring out those details. But it was quite interesting hearing the depth of the story shared after the fact.

Here’s a commentary episode to wrap up this one-shot. We discuss what we liked about the system, and a couple thing that we thought would make it better. There were some “house” add-ons that we also discussed, and commented on how they played in this particular story. We had a great time with this on and we hope you will as well. Enjoy!

In true SG-1 fashion, the action climaxes with a showdown at the gate while the group tries to escape. However, the effort seems to be more difficult than expected as one group member seems to be working against them. Comically, the dice rolls are extremely fitting for the type of characters that were doing battle. Sometime the dice write a good story! Enjoy!

We had a lot of fun with this episode, despite the mission and our rolls not going according to plan. An eerily deserted base camp, a disabled DHD, an unexpected acid rain storm, and in true BTT fashion, a plethora of word-play jokes are what the group has to overcome on the first leg of their mission.

In this episode we attempted to tackle the mechanics of a “Convince Encounter”. Our horrible roles didn’t allow things to go as smoothly as intended, although they made it highly entertaining as the group escapes a diplomatic crisis. Then, this group of newbies  also have to escape a crisis in the Gate Room, and end off-world  without a full mission briefing. What could go wrong?

BTT One-Shot: A Penny For My Thoughts, Ep. 6

A new game style for us warrants some commentary, so that is exactly what we tackle in this episode. We discuss the pace of the game and some things we did not include in the basic format of the game. All in all, we enjoyed this play through and think some compelling stories were created, which sparked some conversation on the dynamics of our roleplaying group and how the session reminded us of previous campaigns and one-shots.

We complete the second round of negative memories for the rest of our patients in this episode. Death plays a major role in the stories of these characters.
